Apples, Orchards and Harvest Time

With harvest time here and orchards heavy with gorgeous fruit, I thought I'd offer up an apple recipe round-up for those of you who are fond of Big Red (or Big Green). Here in western Idaho, we are blessed to be surrounded by some fabulous apple orchards, as well as other fruit orchards and wineries. Plus with Washington as a next door neighbor, it's really hard to avoid the tangy sweet round goodness in the supermarket.

As an aside: Do you live near an orchard, fruit stand or farmer's market? If so, I highly recommend visiting one of these places to pick up a crate full of crunchy red or green fun and then go home and make something delicious out them! Don't forget to send a juicy snack with your kids to gift their teachers with school starting again.

Jammin' Fruity Ideas

Do you can? Put up preserves? In my family it's a time-honored tradition to make jams, jellies, preserves, syrups and pie filling with all sorts of fruits. (We can veggies too but that's for another post!) My great grandmother and grandmother taught my mother [and me] to can and preserve and someday I hope to teach my future daughters-in-law how to do it too, if they don't already know how.

Canning is not only a practical way to store up your family's favorite fruits for winter use, but it's also a fun way to connect or re-connect with friends and extended family. There's nothing quite like sweating together over a boiling pot of jam to help bond peeps together. Get some friends or relatives together and save the fruit for later in the form of jams and jellies, using some of our simple free fruity recipes.

Oh and I threw in the blackberry smoothie recipe to help you cool off after a day of canning - enjoy!

4 Northwest Regional Favorites

In honor of the 2012 Olympics coming up at the end of July, I thought it would be fun to feature famous foods from each state over the next few weeks. Enjoy!

Apple Pie w/ Candied Crust
Over in Washington apples are a pretty big deal. Our Apple Pie with Candied Crust recipe would make a delicious dessert come Friday night, July 27th! (Opening Ceremonies at the Olympic Games.)

Baked Potato Wedges
Ever been to Idaho? People probably think the whole state is covered in potatoes! It's not, but...there are a lot of potatoes here. Try the Baked Potato Wedges recipe and show a little love for the Gem State.

Crepes w/ Nutella & Bananas
I'm told Oregon is famous for its hazelnuts. And what's the main ingredient in Nutella? You guessed it! Hazelnuts! You will go nuts and bananas for our Crepes with Nutella and Bananas recipe!

Curried Pot Roast
We will not neglect our northern sister state, Montana. Three words for you...rocky mountain oysters. As I can't bring myself to try them (google it if you aren't sure what those are) I will happily substitute with another nice beef product - Curried Pot Roast.

However you celebrate the Olympics, include one of our recipes and enjoy a regional treat! Connect with us on Facebook to share your favorite Olympic dish, or visit Alicia's for hundreds of other free recipes!

Ideas for Lent

For many people Ash Wednesday signifies the beginning of Lent, a 40 day period in which fasting, prayer, repentance and restraint are practiced before Easter.  Traditionally, beef, pork and many other rich foods are avoided during this time.  Here are just a few recipe ideas for Lent observance.

Apple Salad
During Lent, it can be challenging to come up with simple but tasty recipes to feed your family.  Try new recipes to keep things interesting.  Focus on using fruits, vegetables, lentils, fish and chicken if you or your family want to observe a more modest menu during this time.

Chicken in Walnut Sauce
Chicken truly is the great equalizer, as it can be prepared quick and simple or used to create more complex and savory dishes.  During lent, you may want to keep it simple by choosing chicken recipes that are basic in preparation but still flavorful enough to tempt you and your family.

Mediterranean Vegetables
If you are ready to make a more permanent change in your eating habits or dietary lifestyle, Lent is a great time to begin.  Again, focus on employing more vegetables and lentils as main courses and investigate new methods to prepare your veggies to keep things interesting.

Enjoy!  Remember, we love feedback and photos!

Deck the Halls with Breads and Pies!

Fah-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la...We're very near to Christmas Day now (4 days to go by my calendar) and our Christmas baking countdown is coming to a close.  We've shared recipes over the phone, googled easy oliebollen recipes on the internet, called our mothers in a panic to get their famous fill-in-the-blank holiday recipes, and sank into the nearest chairs spent and tired from compiling the perfect Christmas menus!

And we aren't done yet!  Hang in there my friends.  We are in the home stretch.  A few more holiday parties and Christmas carols to go and then we can relax with a tall cup of steaming hot cocoa and watch our kids dismantle every single package under the tree.

Speaking of relaxing, here are some bread and pie recipes we can make up ahead of time to have on hand when the kids and in-laws get cranky because their blood sugar levels have plummeted to a new Christmas low.

Enjoy!  Remember to submit a photo of your results to our site, because we love to see what's shakin' and bakin' in your kitchen!
